Nothing says unconstitutional like ignoring, “shall not be infringed” as if it’s not in the 2 nd Amendment.
Oregon’s State Court of Appeals has ruled that Measure 114 is constitutional, setting the stage for one
of the most restrictive gun control laws in the country to go into effect.
Gun control advocates always claim these laws will prevent mass shootings, pointing to incidents like
the 2015 Umpqua Community College shooting. Let’s just ignore the fact that criminals, by definition,
don’t follow laws. Adding more regulations only disarms the law-abiding while emboldening the very
criminals these measures supposedly target. It makes just as much sense as taking cars away from
everyone because some people get into a car and kill people. The idea that nobody will be killed by a
car if nobody has one must make just as much sense to these people as this “sensible gun control” law
does. Frankly, “gun control” should mean hitting what you aim at not restricting firearm possession
from lawful owners.
And then there’s another wonderful aspect to this law. It outlaws “high capacity” magazines. Why? The
standard-issue Glock 17, one of the most popular self-defense firearms in the country, comes with a 17-
round magazine. This means that overnight, thousands of responsible Oregonians who carry for self-
defense will be turned into felons simply for possessing the same firearms they’ve lawfully owned for
years. Oh, but if you can prove that the magazines you have were purchased before the law goes into
effect, then you can keep them. Sure. Everybody keeps the receipts from every magazine purchase that
they’ve done.
This law is so blatantly unconstitutional it’s ridiculous. And the fight is not over. After opponents
exhaust considerable money running this thing through the court system it will find its way to the
Supreme Court of the United States. Hopefully that happens before, by some miracle, the leftists gun
grabbers get a majority on the court or our 2 nd Amendment will be useless.
